Nutty Whole Wheat Loaf Bread

Featured in: Olive-Warm Comfort Meals

This nut-studded whole wheat loaf combines the nutty flavors of walnuts, pecans, and hazelnuts with the hearty texture of whole wheat flour. After mixing the flours, yeast, sugar, and salt, warm water and oil create a soft dough. Chopped nuts are kneaded into the dough for crunch and depth. The dough is allowed to rise twice, producing a golden crust and tender crumb once baked at 375°F. Ideal for sandwiches or enjoyed with butter, this loaf freezes well and welcomes seed or raisin additions for extra taste.

What nuts are best for this bread?

Walnuts, pecans, and hazelnuts add a great balance of flavor and texture, but you can substitute or combine with almonds or seeds for variation.

Can I use all whole wheat flour?

A mix of whole wheat and bread flour provides structure and softness, but you can experiment with all whole wheat for a denser loaf.

How do I know when the bread is baked?

The loaf should be golden brown and sound hollow when tapped, typically after 30-35 minutes at 375°F.

Is it necessary to let the dough rise twice?

Yes, the two rises help develop flavor and create a light, airy texture in the loaf.
